12 Songs, 50 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Blockbuster duets albums–when a star pairs with an A-list cast of co-vocalists–are commonplace these days. So it might be easy to forget that Barbra Streisand practically invented the genre in the late '70s, when she teamed with names like Neil Diamond, Donna Summer, and Barry Gibb. For her 34th studio album (!), Streisand taps contemporary hitmakers as well as legends. "Billy, let's go get some pizza," she quips to Billy Joel at the conclusion of his classic "New York State of Mind." John Mayer both sings and solos on "Come Rain or Come Shine," and Babs is joined by her son Jason Gould on "How Deep Is the Ocean." The tunes are classically arranged, with sweeping string crescendos and rousing piano runs. Even the King shows up for a posthumous duet on "Love Me Tender," an apt pairing for this queen of pop standards.

Enough Is Enough of Enough is Enough

How bout all the negative reviewers go and bash Tony Bennett for remaking or recording all his old songs. Barbra rocks so leave her alone with the negative crap. She's making Gypsy. This album is going to be great. Can't wait!!

Yes!

“It Had to Be You” is a fantastic opener for this album, and thank goodness they filmed the recording of it. I never fail to be amazed at how Barbra Streisand records her music, especially accompanied by live musicians, especially singing with a great artist like Michael Buble. The track “New York State of Mind” of course Streisand has recorded before, here though she’s more mature and her mellowed vocal cords give the song more depth and meaning, Billy Joel is a great “partner” on the song! Some fans have blasted Streisand for not venturing out of her comfort zone with new material, instead choosing to record hits from her own vast catalog. I don’t mind her singing her hits on this new recording, the best singers in the world have reinterpreted their hits on new albums. I remain humbled and so grateful that at 72, Streisand still wants to put on a pair of headphones and sing into a microphone. I hope she continues to record for years to come.
