This fine Canadian ensemble takes its name from the distinguished Orford String Quartet that thrived from 1965 to 1991. The young players certainly maintain the high standards of their older namesakes with playing of precision and passion. Commissioned by the quartet, the album brings together music by three contemporary Canadian composers. François Dompierre’s Par 4 chemins is tuneful and slightly folksy, Airat Ichmouratov’s String Quartet No. 4 has a beautiful feeling for texture and plenty of melodic charm, while Tim Brady’s String Quartet No. 2 “Journal” is a clever exploration of perspective. The playing is very impressive, clearly inspired by these engaging pieces.
