EDITORS’ NOTES

Paperhaus recorded their self-titled full-length debut live to tape at The Blighthouse. In the tradition of masterful improvisational bands from Slint to Television, Washington, D.C.’s Paperhaus stretch their material as one might imagine Sonic Youth without the bleeding distortion and all the lyricism. “Misery” takes things to an existential extreme. But they quickly re-emerge with the shockingly focused complexity of “Surrender.” Early EPs and tours sharpened the repartee between Alex Tebeleff and Eduardo Rivera; they added drummer Danny Bentley in 2014. That chemistry flows through the fluid guitar lines of “Cairo,” “Untitled,” and “Surrender to the Night.”
