Unlike other ’80s groups, Duran Duran aren’t trying to recapture a bygone era, or squeeze themselves into lanes in which they don’t fit. Paper Gods feels like a natural progression for the pioneering New Romantic band. Friends like Mark Ronson, Mr Hudson, Kiesza, and John Frusciante usher the boys into the now, coating them in expressive pop-art patterns. “Last Night in the City” and “Change the Skyline” speak to Duran Duran’s urbane electro-pop sensibility, while “Pressure Off” is a glorious disco-funk throwdown with Nile Rodgers and Janelle Monáe, who gift them their own “Get Lucky.”
