Five albums in, Louisville rock band and Taco Bell beneficiaries White Reaper continue to spread their tendrils into as many forms of catchiness as possible on Only Slightly Empty. Reduced to a trio in 2024 after the departure of twin-brother rhythm section Sam and Nick Wilkerson, remaining members Tony Esposito (vocals/guitar), Ryan Hater (keys), and guitarist Hunter Thompson(!) find a ’90s alt-rock stride right out of the gate on “Coma” before fusing Cheap Trick-style infectiousness with the Warped Tour’s teenage sugar fix on “Blink.” Lead single “Honestly” is electronically enhanced power pop while “Freakshow” hits the Jimmy Eat World sweet spot. Later, the emo-tinged “Pocket” and “Enemy John” pave the way for “Rubber Cement,” a tune that takes its cues from White Reaper’s former tourmates Weezer.
