When the Belgian label Crammed Discs released Konono No. 1’s Congotronics in 2005, it took the indie music scene by storm. The high-energy Congolese band produced a joyful noise by playing likembes and found-object percussion through a homemade sound system. The result, complete with group vocals, was distorted, hypnotic, and irresistible. Since then Crammed Discs has released a series of albums, also called Congotronics, that features Konono No. 1 and other bands that combine traditional African and modern elements. For Tradi-Mods vs. Rockers, the label invited an intriguing roster of artists to cover or reinvent material originally presented in the series. Animal Collective’s inspired remake of Kasai Allstars’ “Quick As White,” which incorporates “audio excerpts” from the original, has an ecstatic vibe that the experimental band is known for. Deerhoof’s “Travel Broadens the Mind,” which tackles Kasai Allstars’ “Wa Muluendu,” chugs along in delightfully funky and choppy ways. Taking an entirely different approach, Jherek Bischoff reimagines Konono No. 1’s “Kule Kule” as a piece for chamber orchestra.
