O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Music from the Film) [Deluxe Edition]
The soundtrack to the Coen Brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou? was a surprise hit of classic Americana tunes. The smart and quirky track selections, “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” “You Are My Sunshine,” “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” and “O Death” hardly seemed like songs likely to sell millions in the digital age. Yet, with T Bone Burnett as the producer and project coordinator, O Brother exceeded commercial and artistic expectations. This “Deluxe Edition” adds 14 tracks recorded but not issued with the original album. Some appear in the film. The same depth and organic appeal can be heard in Van Dyke Parks’ and Norman Blake’s versions of “Big Rock Candy Mountain.” The Cox Family offer their takes on “Keep On the Sunny Side” and “In the Highways.” John Hartford brings his fiddle for “Tishomingo Blues” and “Hogfoot.” It’s a welcome expansion of the original album, giving fans of the original even more music to ponder.
