5 Songs, 21 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

With his long-time collaborator and film-scoring partner Atticus Ross officially a member of Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor explores even more skin-crawling, drama-escalating atmospherics. Not the Actual Events is a five-song EP that plunges deep into the murky abyss—lyrics of despair, confusion, and discontent grind against a wall of buzzsaw guitars, electronic effects, and apocalyptic textures. Palpable intensity spills out of “Dear World,” the lamenting “She’s Gone Away,” and the dystopian “Burning Bright (Field on Fire).” “The Idea of You” recalls With Teeth with its live drums and pummeling guitar balled into a tight fist that wildly expands and contracts in classic NIN style.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Classic NIN is reborn

Finally what us NIN fans have all been waiting for : a step back into the angst ridden past. Very distorted and edgy sounding. It's like NIN on acid. This is the NIN we've been missing. Welcome back :)

Testing the fence.

I'm not sure what drove this, but it's a fresh take for NIN. It is challenging and layered. A sonic treat. It's complex and carries secrets. I'm thrilled that Trent keeps going. It's been an amazing ride. I wish nothing but the best for him. If he never made a single new song again, I'd remain just as thankful for such phenomenal music. Atticus + NIN has been such an added bonus. Again, I'm just so happy and thankful for all Trent has done. I know it's been a hard road many times for him, but he continues to give so much with his talent. I hope he knows how much it means to long time fans like me. We love his music, but are more happy he is seeing the reward and recognition, personal and professional, that he deserves.

What We've All Been Waiting For

This EP is AMAZING. It's Trent finally reclaiming his throne as the kind of industrial. It's got soundscapes I haven't heard since his 90s material, and if this is what thing to come will sound like, shut up and take my money. Burning Bright needs the whole album to come along before it makes sense, but when you listen to the whole EP, you'll get it.
