EDITORS’ NOTES

Sweeter is a stylistic departure from DeGraw’s more sensitive musings. There’s some confrontational funk pumping out of “Radiation,” which grooves hard on the surface. Pry under the hood, and it sounds like DeGraw’s picking a fight with an ex he keeps backpedaling to after closing time. In“Run Every Time” the chorus lyrics reveal a guy who’s confessing that romantic commitment isn’t one of his strengths.

My new "thing"

I'll be playing this in heavy rotation. It's superior lyrically and better arranged than FREE or CHARIOT (I didn't like the self-titled album, so I pretend it didn't happen).

A Sweet Treat for Gavin DeGraw Fans

Gavin returns to form with "Sweeter." Incorporating hints of "Gavin Degraw," "Free," and much to my delight, "Chariot." He does a nice job exploring the space. An effort that would make Bruce Dickinson proud. He has a nice range of style and emotion on this record. "Where You Are," "Spell It Out," and "Run Every Time" give off more of an organic, slow to mid-tempo DeGraw sound. He also rocks on tunes like "Sweeter," and "Radiation." A very intriguing song on this album is "Soldier." The overall feel of the album is a bit more withdrawn, and not overly produced, which true Gavin DeGraw fans love and appreciate. There are certainly moments of rawness, which is where Degraw shines brightest on this project.

9.25/10 --(After only a few listens) --Very good album, and one that should bring true DeGraw fans much joy. Check out James Morrison, Frank Hurd, and Marc Broussard's "Carencro" if you enjoy this album.

With "Sweeter," Gavin Degraw adds to his credentials as one of the top singers and songwriters of our generation.
