The Guess Who were Canada’s first rock stars, reshaping soul, orchestral pop, and British Invasion sounds in their own, unshaven image. This collection follows their hit parade from 1969 to 1975, during which time they mastered heartbreaking ballads (“These Eyes”) and steel-toed rockers (“No Time”) alike. But some of their biggest songs betrayed a subversively Canadian perspective: The sleazy boogie of “American Woman” concealed a Vietnam War critique, while the socialist messaging of hippy-dippy “Share the Land” got it banned by some U.S. stations.
