My Heart, My Life
My Comfort Remains
One of Peter Gabriel's many bright ideas was bringing Pakistan's foremost singer of the devotional Sufi music Qawwali together with sonic wizard Michael Brook. The results are exotic but invitingly pop-friendly, with layers of synthesizers, bowed guitars, and vocals overdubbed into a heavenly choir. There's a luxurious prog-rock feel to "Intoxicated," while fluid reggae rhythms support "My Comfort Remains." Nusrat's voice feels warm and gentle, until his soul-stirring wails are fully unleashed on the cathartic "Longing."
