This posthumously released collection, culled from the era of Elliott Smith’s self-titled album and Either/Or, comprises unreleased tracks that are easily as gorgeous as those that originally stunned listeners. The songwriter’s downcast, melodic indie rock takes an upbeat swerve on “New Monkey,” while “Angel In the Snow” captures the hushed, lo-fi gentleness that earned Smith his cult following. His cover of Big Star’s teenage love anthem “Thirteen” is rendered so delicate it sounds more achingly vulnerable than the original.
