Apple Music Home Session: Tom A. Smith

“I tend to record bigger, instrument-heavy numbers, so to strip them back was great for me,” Tom A. Smith says of his Apple Music Home Session. “It was very similar to my demo recording experience, but with extra bite, as this will surely be heard by more people.” The Sunderland singer-songwriter evolved his indie-rock sound over lockdown, recording demos and adapting covers of his favorite tracks. Here, he returns to the air of his formative years in style with stripped-back versions of 2022 singles “Never Good Enough” and “Man Overboard.” Sandwiched between those tracks (lifted from Tom’s EP 2) also lies a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “traitor”—a rousing reflection on loss and betrayal. “I think everything she has put out has been perfect, so I couldn’t change the melody, it just wouldn’t be as good,” he says. “The fact that I have a deeper voice and perform a little more emotively makes it different enough.”
