“Hearing that name, it gave me a sense of timeless music,” Shenseea tells Apple Music about titling her new album Never Gets Late Here. “It just never gets old.” The same could be said about much of the Jamaican star’s catalog so far, beginning in the mid-2010s with a dancehall foundation and Vybz Kartel cosign. Into the 2020s, her songs with Megan Thee Stallion and Kanye West led to her hip-hop-infused album debut, ALPHA, which featured hitmaking rappers 21 Savage and Offset alongside reggae icons Beenie Man and Sean Paul. By comparison, Never Gets Late Here finds Shenseea in an even greater position of creative strength, more than willing to experiment while maintaining her identity. “I’ve always been an artist who just always tries new things because that’s how magic happens,” she says. Her longtime fans will get their dancehall fix via “Die for You” and “Tap Out,” while the like-minded “Keep a Place” and “Neva Neva” deliver her vibes in the classic one-drop style. Occasionally, her gaze goes global, most evident on the collaborative cuts “Red Flag” with Brazilian funk ambassador Anitta and “Work Me Out” with Afrobeats luminary Wizkid. Still, it’s her broader pop moments—like the Coi Leray team-up “Flava” and the emotive “Stars”—that travel beyond borders without sacrificing the impact of her powerful voice and messages. “My album is so versatile,” Shenseea says, unable to pick a favorite from the bunch. “It’s almost like you can like this one today—but tomorrow is a different day.”
