"Learning" is really a fascinating and personal album. It is surprisingly catchy; the opening track is always stuck in my head. There is a dark, melancholic vibe here, and listening makes you feel like you are peeking in on someone else's tragedies, and you can't look away. I don't get the sense that the emotions here are contrived at all; it seems that there was great purpose matching the dark and confused lyrics with simple and lush orchestrations. One of the best records of the year, by far.

Disturbing, Haunting, Brilliant

The songs are intimate but often painful to listen to, as if you are reading the diary of a tortured soul or someone whose friends all have tortured lives. I immediately thought of the voices of Neil Young, a little Rufus Wainwright, the writing of Dennis Cooper, maybe with a little bit of Christopher Rice mixed in, as well. The music has a scratchy old record player sound, and the singer doesn't try to be heard above the music, but it all seems to work. I like it but I don't think I can take listening to more than a few songs at a time; it'd be almost like reading the pages of a diary of someone who was killed or killed themselves...that's how heavy it can feel.
