10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

There are no winners in Nebraska—a bleak sonic landscape where America’s dispossessed are ground into dust by social forces beyond their control. There’s the drifting murderer of the title track; a child whose family slaves away beneath a “Mansion On the Hill”; and a hard-luck guy forced to kill for the mob in “Atlantic City.” Springsteen’s darkest record is also his sparest: just voice and guitar lost in a sea of lonely reverb. There's an almost bone-chilling starkness to these songs, but they're deeply moving too.

All-time classic

This is the only Springsteen album I own, and the only one I could want. This is America. This is firmly entrenched in the canon of great American art. Everyone from film-makers to poets have been inspired by the stories found here. Recorded in a motel room one night on a 4-track. Raw and real and timeless. If you think you're a fan of American music, of any ilk, but you don't own this record, get with it. Fast.

What??

Wow. I was not a Sprinsteen fan, then I got this album. I had no idea this guy could write like this. The only problem; now I'm ashamed of myself for not getting this album 10 years ago.

Retroactive 1984 Review

Back when I was starting high school this record came out and all I can say is I'm very glad today this was the first album I really wanted to immerse myself into back then. I remember actually wanting to watch the needle lift the music off this album so that i wouldnt miss a moment.
