Native North America, Vol. 1: Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985
Various Artists

This 34-track anthology of music by artists of Native North American heritage features sharp social commentaries, mystical meditations, and haunting love ballads that combine indigenous folk elements with mainstream pop music forms to striking effect. Compiled by Canadian archaeologist Kevin Howes, the collection’s songs range from the dreamy acoustic folk of David Campbell’s “Sky-Man and the Moon” to the raucous garage rock of Sugluk’s “Fall Away” and the swirling tribal chant of Willie Dunn’s “Peruvian Dream (Part 2).” Finally rescued from obscurity, these recordings are both culturally meaningful and musically compelling.
