Narkopop is Wolfgang Voigt’s first album as Gas since the career-defining Pop came out in 2000. Thankfully, almost nothing has changed. Darker and eerier than Pop, Narkopop mixes vaporous drones, distant clangs, and the occasional throb of bass and drum for a sound by turns gorgeous, expansive, and unsettling—like a symphony drifting in an out of earshot across a vast train platform. At times, like on the martial stomp of “Narkopop 5” or the heavenly “Narkopop 7,” the sound snaps into meditative focus, only to melt away again.
