10 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Released in 1988, By All Means Necessary retained the sonic intensity that had propelled the early BDP singles, but KRS expanded his vision of inner-city realities to include messages of African-American unity and betterment. Give KRS credit. This adjustment took a lot of guts, and it paid off. The rapper was better suited to being a community leader—a secular preacher, really—than he was a gangster. His presence on the mic was as large as his physical presence (the 6’4” KRS was built like a football player), and many of these songs focus on extinguishing any idea that he could be underestimated. Together these 10 songs form a thunderous campaign soundtrack.

Seminal rap album of black consciousness

I was nineteen when this album came out and it blew me away. The beats were fresh, the lyrics were raw and it forced you to think about the reality of life in a more cerebral way. Listening to it now all these years later, it still delivers a powerful, poignant punch. Definitely one of the top 50 rap albums all time!!!

Social Studies Awesomeness

Hi, i'm Chris Perry and I love Boogie Down Productions! I played it to my class one day and they were laughing in happiness (Clear throat). The lyrics to this song are poignent and liberal. KRS-One sets my soul free. It also helps me make sweet love to my wife. I hope she doesn't pop one of my pimples. I can't read amessage of ancient days without it.

A Top 100 Hip-Hop Album

In my perspective, KRS-1 is the best emcee of all times! This album is part of the Golden Age of Hip-Hop; if you know what Hip-Hop is or means then you have to have this in your collection. The whole album is solid from beginning to end.
