Mozart's concert arias can be delightful, but unfortunately this recording is not. Banse has a pretty sound, but her singing constantly gets one to thinking how difficult Mozart is to sing well. She seems to have chosen arias that don't demand much in the way of florid technique, but even what little there is gets short shrift here - lumpy, inaccurate passage work and a weak trill (see Tk. 7 if you don't believe me). Interpretively she would seem to be suited to the more winsome pieces (such as Tk. 1 or 10), but here she is simply uninteresting and lacking even the smallest bit of charm generated by a Popp or a Bartoli. She shows some fire in the more dramatic pieces (Tk. 3, for example) but here she sounds overparted and unable to do the drama justice. The best track is the title track, but even this has been done better elsewhere. Even a dull artist like Renee Fleming is preferable to this one for simple technical polish alone. Best leave this artist to lieder and leave Mozart alone!
