EDITORS’ NOTES

Blending rock, blues, and R&B, the Mississippi-based singer Mary Frances Massey is versatile even though this EP is her first release. She recalls a younger version of Bonnie Raitt or maybe Susan Tedeschi, with a breezy but soulful delivery that occasionally rockets into the stratosphere. And that's not a bad thing either. From the smooth femme-fatale funk of “Mothalova” to the hard rock posturing of “Movin’ On,” Massey works her way through these original tunes with a tight trio led by guitarist Trevor McKay (who duets with her on the excellent “Perfect Storm”); they push, prod, and provide excellent support.
