The child of Nigerian immigrants, Ogi is painfully aware of the ways that the world often refuses to validate her feelings. So she uses Monologues, and her voice, as a platform for the soliloquies that cycle through her mind. Monologues is a six-track collection of the L.A. singer’s unfiltered thoughts, made only more resonant by her velvety vocals, which belong to the Sade school of jazzy sophistication. She can be prideful, summoning the world to “bow down to a goddess image” on “I Got It,” produced by No I.D. Other times, she’s filled with self-doubt. “I hate that I’m not what you want,” she sings on “Bitter.” By exposing her own experiences, she liberates everyone to make peace with their own insecurities.
