This second collection of Miles Davis' early '50s Blue Note sides showcases the sheer power of the musicians he brought on board for these sessions. An all-star band of jazz innovators surround him, from drummer Art Blakey's heavy swing on the swaggering "Weirdo" to J.J. Johnson's soft, warm trombone on the delicate ballad "I Waited For You." Although tracks like Bud Powell's swinging, Latin-tinged "Tempus Fugit" draw on Davis' Birth of the Cool innovations, there's a bluesy hard bop edge to the arrangements.
