They invented hardcore

You've seen the meth ad with the fried egg as your brain? Forget that - MP1 is your brain left out for a month in the 115º heat in the Valley of the Sun. If the Meat Puppets really did indeed invent hardcore then on Meat Puppets 1 they stretched and contorted it like one would a newspaper photo grafted onto Silly Putty. This collection of brisk shredding screaming tantrums makes one wonder what could possibly be so wrong in their world? Deciphering the lyrics is next to impossible. We are left with the realization that maybe this is just 3 dudes rocking-the-f***-out. With perhaps only a small suitcase of effects, Kurt Kirkwood's playing is blistering, yet at times twangy and psychedelic. Brother Chris Kirkwood's singing is, well, psychotic, and Derick Bostrom's drumming is solid and tight. The bonus tracks here feature the wickedly fast and chaotic In A Car 7" as well as whatever else they found on old cassettes. I will buy it simply to add to my collection of MP Dead covers. They may have invented hardcore but they loved the Grateful Dead.
