The music of John Luther Adams, with which I have become acquainted over the past week or so, is enigmatic in its character; it is impossible to put any label on this music other than the fact that it forces you to reexamine your perspective on the nature and quality of music.

Having just heard a live performance of this piece at Furman University, I will say that it is an experience best heard from start to finish, taking a slight pause between each movement for your ear to clear. It is so rare in this age of stimulus and response for us to be able to take 70 minutes to listen through a piece of music, but perhaps that is the most prescient message of Adams' music: that it forces us to sit and listen, and think.
