Though most of their big hits in the ’80s were written outside of the band (“Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Eternal Flame”) this foursome defined Southern California in so many ways; their sunshine pop and well-crafted harmonies were worthy of women whose girlhood record collections were crammed with Beach Boys singles and Emitt Rhodes albums. Their musical verve summoned all sorts of images and sounds, from late-’70s power pop at the Whiskey a Go Go (“Hero Takes a Fall”) to wind blowing through palm trees overlooking the Pacific Ocean (“I’ll Set You Free”) to some ’60s Laurel Canyon folk-out (“Following”).
