5 Songs, 1 Hour 15 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Osmo Vänskä’s Sibelius recordings have revealed his acute ear for orchestral color, which transfers powerfully into the music of Mahler. This Symphony No. 5 is tightly argued, impressively guided from pinnacle to pinnacle, and full of striking incidental detail. The Minnesota Orchestra are on fine form and this recording does them proud. From the firmly coiled intensity of the opening movement, via a ravishing adagietto, to a wonderfully concentrated rondo-finale, this is a compelling Mahler Fifth.
