Always Merry and Bright
Magic for Everybody
Lever Pulled Down
Tell Her What She Wants to Know
To think that most people know Sam Phillips’ music only as it accompanied the television show Gilmore Girls is just another example of how weird and fragmented the music business has become over the years. Sam Phillips has been a top-notch singer-songwriter with a number of essential albums, from Cruel Inventions to Martinis and Bikinis and the acoustic weave of Fan Dance. This 2010 EP, Magic for Everbody, is only too short; at just under 16 minutes, it feels like a tease. The title track is a trademark Phillips shuffle. With expert backing from drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Greg Leisz, Phillips is in flawless company. In the end, however, it’s Phillips’ engaging and light-as-a- feather voice that makes things what they are. Eric Gorfain adds some tasteful string arrangements but it’s the way Phillips layers her vocals for the chorus of “Trouble” that stops your heart. The EP includes a complete re-working of the song, “Tell Her What She Wants to Know,” a tune that appeared on the 2003 soundtrack of Gilmore Girls.
