Another Bundle of Tantrums

Editors’ Notes There’s a mournful grain to Jasmine Thompson’s voice that makes well-known songs sound like freshly minted heartbreak. For her second album interpreting modern pop classics, she forlornly sings “Rather Be” and “Royals” to minimal guitar accompaniment, then wrests quiet desperation out of the drama of “Wrecking Ball.” While “Sweet Child O’ Mine” may seem like a punning reference to her age (she was 13 when this album was released in 2014), the sparkling piano and doleful melody take the song to an unexpectedly beatific place.
