22 Songs, 55 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

For the soundtrack to the 2013 installment of his postmodern Mexploitation film series, Machete mastermind Robert Rodríguez takes a far more active musical role than many other directors. Not only did he partner with Carl Thiel to write a number of larger-than-life instrumental pieces for the score, he's also in the band that provides the film's tongue-in-cheek theme song: the mock-anthemic mariachi-metal "They Call Him Machete." Rodriguez doesn't run the whole show, though—the album also features "Telele" by Brian J. Ramos, which blends hip-hop with cumbia influences, and the surf-Mex "Machete Kills End Titles" from Chicano rockers Tito & Tarantula.

It Works...

I think it works…the soundtrack is great for people who like From Dusk Till Dawn and other RR Westerns. Not bad.
