Florian Hoefner’s third album explores the German-born pianist’s move from New York to Newfoundland through intricate but accessible post-bop compositions. “The Narrows” and “Luminosity” unfold with graceful melodies and unhurried solos from Hoefner and saxophonist Seamus Blake. Blake gets more adventurous on “In Circles” and “Newfound Jig,” where his notes swirl like a flurry of snowflakes while Sam Anning’s nimble bass and Peter Kronreif’s playful trap kit add nuance and stability. True to the album’s title, the group glows on quieter numbers (“North Country”) that showcase a dextrous choice of light and dark tones.
