LP2 (Bonus Track Version)

LP2, or “The Pink Album” as it’s commonly known, stands as Sunny Day Real Estate’s classic release. The band splintered immediately after, with singer Jeremy Enigk going onto an unusual solo career and its rhythm section of Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith joining Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters. However, their quick death feels appropriate; by album’s end, after the many ups and downs, it doesn’t sound like there would be much left for a follow-up. This was a band with no need to repeat itself. They got it right the first time and were accorded Godfather of Emo status in the process. Tracks such as “Friday,” “8” and “Rodeo Jones” capture their dynamic attack from intimate whispers to scalding screams. (Listen to the dramatic layering of guitars on “5/4” or “Waffle” for further proof.) The band captures personal angst with musical sophistication that can be delivered on an arena stage. The 2009 re-mastered and expanded edition includes “Spade and Parade” and “Bucket of Chicken,” two worthy additions to the band’s catalog.
