10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

For the past 20 years, Memphis’ Lucero have been one of the hardest-working bands around, touring relentlessly and fidgeting restlessly with their Southern rock sound. For their ninth album, Among the Ghosts, they strip away the Stax horns and rockabilly piano flourishes of past releases, opting instead for a live-in-the-studio feel that foregrounds Ben Nichols’ distinctive, gravelly vocals and his piercing, personal lyrics. “Even though I’m in a happier place than I’ve ever been before,” he recently told Billboard, “the songs on the record are a little bit darker.” And indeed, tracks like “To My Dearest Wife”—inspired by Civil War soldiers’ letters—add historical gravitas to the Southern gothic style they’ve been perfecting for two decades.

Maybe better than TN

It’s always been you is the song of the year.

Debut Day

Waited up late for the official release and happy I did. Those of us who listen live have been hearing these songs for awhile. The recorded versions do not disappoint. I'd be more excited with the release if I heard the recorded versions first and then live. In person they roar and on the release they are slightly below the surface. Asking the producer and the band to recapture live is an impossible ask. That being said, I probably won't like anything better this year. Lyrically and sonically its a terrific recording.

Always Better Than the Last...

Always tweaking their sound, just enough to be a little different with each offering. This album is amazing...Songs 1 through 10. My words can’t do it justice.
