Love Supreme

Love Supreme

After a lengthy hiatus, Nigerian German musician Nneka returns with her fourth album. Sculpting melodies with elements from Afro-folk, R&B, reggae, soul, and electronica, Love Supreme explores themes such as trust, assurance, and the essence of being. Over 13 tracks imbued with the singer-songwriter’s incisive lyricism, she enlists collaborators Mounir Maarouf, Klimperboy, Bass-Productions, Unik, and Farhot for an offering both inward- and outward-looking. Drawing from a range of perspectives, the album oscillates between addressing romantic, familial, platonic, and spiritual connections. Through Nneka’s impassioned and occasionally whispery vocals, songs like “Yahweh” and the synth-laden title track are like conversations with a higher power. While the emotive piano of “Maya” continues in that prayerful vein, “With You” centers spirituality in a couple’s quest to find their way together. A romantic touch carries on over the bouncy kicks and stringy bassline of the delightfully metaphoric “Tea?”, which sways gently as Nneka pines over a lover. “I’ve been missing you,” she sings. “’Cause in your absence, I feel your presence… I’m sure you didn’t mean it.” The percussive, introspective ballad “About Guilt” addresses forgiveness, while the notion of finding one’s light shines through on the acoustic “Space.” And the pidgin-sprinkled “Buckle Up” references ska and mirrors the sonics of standout track “Yansh,” which embodies the album’s eclectic influences by cocooning Nneka’s sociopolitical commentary in Afrobeat-infused production.
