Throwing Snow, a.k.a. London’s Ross Tones, was once known for subtlety and sensitivity: His 2011 album, Wallow, put a particularly dreamy spin on bass music, while the synthier Axioms and Embers dialed up the psychedelic splendor. But on Loma, he flexes his muscles. That’s immediately apparent from the distortion and snarling acid of the opening “Simmer,” a warehouse rave anthem par excellence. “Trébucher” and “Subtitles” fuse the sumptuous electronics of past releases with sternum-thumping bass and drums, and “Tantrum” is even meaner, riding atop snarling breaks that live up to the track’s name. But unlike some harder/faster/louder-obsessed producers, Tones understands the power of dynamics. The fastest song here, “Vulpine,” is also the nimblest, trotting out footwork rhythms so fleet they seem to be walking on air.
