While it was a huge band in the alternative universe of the late '80s and early '90s, Jane's Addiction was never part of an organic scene. Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro stuck to a level of depravity that was an early chapter of the classic rock manual, and their bigger-than-life approach was there in every note they played. The band's sound was thick and surreal, with Farrell multitracking his voice in the studio so many times that reality had blurred into fiction by the chorus. This concert—a NYC show from July 2011 in support of The Great Escape Artist—features only "Irresistible Force (Met the Immovable Object)" from the band's then-latest album, with "Whores" from its self-titled 1987 debut album kicking things off. Several key tracks from Nothing's Shocking and nearly half of Ritual de lo Habitual fill out the concert program. The hit "Been Caught Stealing" gives Navarro plenty of room to move, while Farrell proves he's still the deliberate instigator whom fans remember from back when Generation X was a term that nearly meant something.
