With jazz’s emphasis on soloing and bandleaders, it’s sometimes hard to remember that this music is really about community. The Mack Avenue Superband’s Live! is a sharp reminder of this. Featuring 10 players from the Mack Avenue label, the all-star Superband performs live at the Detroit-based label’s hometown jazz festival. Props go to producer Al Pryor, who does an excellent job here in finding time for each player to shine while encouraging a vibe that's as warm as the September evening this was recorded. Pryor also leaves in the crowd’s cheers of support after the musicians take solos, only adding to the communal ambience. Highlights include a freshly re-imagined version of “Guantanamera” featuring pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages” with Hot Club of Detroit guitarist Evan Perri, a jumping version of “Oh Daddy Blues” featuring vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant and pianist Aaron Diehl, and “Liberty Avenue Stroll” by trumpeter Sean Jones. This is a fine example of how Mack Avenue has truly taken on the mantle of one of today’s best jazz labels.
