14 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Recorded a half-century after the release of their landmark debut, this live set captures a veteran Sonics outfit whose Pacific Northwest-bred garage punk has only grown more ferocious with time. Two of the most frenzied moments, “He’s Waiting” and “Head On Backwards,” capture the band’s brutal simplicity: scowling riffs, ear-bleeding sax skronk, and frenzied howls all piled atop one another in dense, suffocating fashion. A who’s who of punk and grunge celebs jump onstage to honor their heroes’ legacy, among them Eddie Vedder, whose savage cry punctuates the supercharged rave-up “Leaving Here.”
