Reservoir Dogs (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs, revealed that his musical taste runs as deep as his love for obscure B-movies. This soundtrack features vacant song introductions by deadpan comedian Steven Wright as DJ K-Billy (hosting “K-Billy's Super Sounds of the Seventies Weekend”), contrasted with the crackling energy of the songs themselves, like Blue Swede’s 1974 bubblegum reworking of the 1968 B.J. Thomas hit “Hooked on a Feeling” and Sandy Rogers' effervescent country-pop tune “Fool for Love.” But this soundtrack also serves as a solid reminder of how certain songs can bring back vivid memories. Tarantino exploited this by setting Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You” to the film’s most disturbing and gory scene, involving a razorblade and a policeman’s ear. Interspersed throughout the soundtrack are some of the movie’s more memorable quotes. The best of these follows British hard rock band Bedlam’s cover of The Guess Who’s “Magic Carpet Ride,” when actor Steve Buscemi explains his hilarious theory on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.”
