Editors’ Notes On Dreams of a Mechanical Man, co-produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, Brooklyn piano virtuoso Aaron Parks continues to expand his sonic palette and push past genre boundaries with the sleek, economical electric band he calls Little Big. Parks plays synths, electric pianos, and assorted instruments—and sings a bit too, on “The Shadow & the Self” and “Unknown”—but his sparkling acoustic piano remains central, and the way it blends melodically with Greg Tuohey’s fuzz-tweaked guitar proves again to be the band’s signature. Electric bassist David Ginyard and drummer Tommy Crane lock in with supple rhythms conversant with jazz but drawn from pop, rock, and other musical languages, reflecting Parks’ wide-ranging influences. In contrast with Parks’ meticulously written themes, “Is Anything Okay?” and “Where Now?” were spontaneously composed, highlighting a live, improvisational chemistry honed from extensive touring after the band’s 2018 debut.
