Liszt, Pärt: Vanessa Wagner

Liszt, Pärt: Vanessa Wagner

At first glance, Liszt and Pärt might seem unlikely companions, but the Liszt that Vanessa Wagner has chosen plumbs similar spiritual depths as the three Pärt pieces. Liszt’s Harmonies religieuses et poétiques is a cycle of religious meditations, with a powerfully confessional mood. Wagner plays seven of the ten, including two of his greatest piano works: “Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude” and “Funérailles.” She’s wonderfully attuned to Liszt’s spiritual mood here and plays with a lovely feeling for color, moving easily from Liszt to Pärt by maintaining that delicacy, especially in the touching innocence of “Für Alina.”
