Though Lauren Daigle is already one of the most popular contemporary Christian artists in the genre, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter reintroduces herself with this self-titled double album, her first full-length LP since the monumental success of her 2018 release Look Up Child. Released in two parts, the full record is a sprawling but cohesive statement from Daigle, both musically and spiritually, and hints at what she’s been up to in the intervening five years. Written largely during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strong theme of hopefulness on the record, like on opening track “Thank God I Do,” a gentle, spare love song that revels in God’s omnipresence. “Kaleidoscope Jesus” fits the vibe of the album’s colorful cover image, establishing a laidback groove over which Daigle sings breezily of the myriad ways Jesus shows up in her life. Daigle opens the second half of the record with the Gary Clark Jr. collaboration “Salvation Mountain,” an old-school gospel song with crackling flourishes from the guitar whiz and a healthy dose of belting from Daigle. Other highlights on the LP include “Turbulent Skies,” a poppy empowerment anthem with an appropriately buoyant horn section; the quietly soulful ballad “He’s Never Gunna Change”; and album closer “You’re All I’ll Take With Me,” a jazzy, breezy declaration of undying faith.
