Language & Perspective

With their debut album, the Southern California quartet Bad Suns build on the success of their 2013 breakout single "Cardiac Arrest." Like that exuberant slice of alt-rock excellence, Language & Perspective brims with a captivating mix of influences, from '80s new wave to '00s dance-punk, with excursions through reggae and synth-pop. The energetic opener, "Matthew James," struts its stuff with frisky guitars and a sing-along woah-oh chorus, while "Pretend" switches gears with a midtempo groove and acoustic interlude. Giving "Cardiac Arrest" a run for its money, however, is "Salt," a criminally catchy track with all the makings of a pop smash: funky percussion, smooth keys, and vocal melodies that linger in your head for days.
