Ronin—aka Providence guitarist Shezan Shaikh—is an addition to a growing list of Indian metal musicians turned electronic producers. The Mumbai composer is also among a handful of local synthwave exponents, joining Dreamhour and fellow metalhead Popcorn Kid. A child of the ’90s, he has said Kyoto Inferno offers nostalgia for adults, and aims to evoke memories of cartoons, RC cars and video games. He doesn’t so much as colour outside the lines as he uses different hues—including strings and crunchy rock riffs—to brighten cinematic sounds.
