EDITORS’ NOTES

Hip-hop, IDM, and jazz collide on this combustible collaboration between the Los Angeles beatmaker Daedelus and the shape-shifting combo Kneebody, for Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. Both playing and programming are fierce: "Drum Battle" floats wild horns over rolling 5/4 beats, and "Loops" flirts with all-out modal meltdown over rattling, triple-time drums. But they know when to ease off the throttle, too: "They Are We" and "Not Love" are airy ambient ballads, and "Thought Not" slips into a contemplative groove as heady as rockers like "The Hole" are physical.

Where am I

Inspired and insanely well crafted, as usual with all Kneebody's work. This album jumps off a cliff and redefines jazz and improvisation as it loops and spirals to compositional New World…but, then, I've only listened to it three times today.
