12 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Hailing from Michigan but currently based in Atlanta, Curtis Harding is a classic-minded soul singer more in tune with the pioneers of yesterday than today's digi-processed, made-for-TV instastars. He has worked with both Cee Lo Green and The Black Keys' Cole Alexander (in the group Night Sun), and has a distinct garage rock-meets-gospel vibe mixed into his bluesy, passionate vocals. Released via the indie California label Burger Records, Soul Power is his first solo album and embraces a vintage sound while never coming off as corny or overtly retro. Dirty guitar licks, vampy organs, rubbery basslines, and bold horn blasts accompany his top-notch crooning, and there's a lot to like on all 12 of the tracks here. Highlights include "Next Time," "I Don't Wanna Go Home," "Keep On Shining," and "Heaven's on the Other Side." He's one of the freshest new talents in the R&B game; hopefully this is just the start of much more to come.
