An embarrassment of power-pop riches, the 98 tracks collected here trace the arc of the iconic Memphis band all the way from member Chris Bell’s Beatles-esque demos with his pre-Big Star bands to Alex Chilton’s haunting solo cover of “Nature Boy” unearthed from the chaotic sessions for his group’s 1974 swansong Third/Sister Lovers. Recorded at a hometown show in January of 1973, endearingly scrappy versions of “Back of a Car” and the wrenching “Thirteen” capture the band at the height of their powers.
