In an homage to his home state, drummer Mark Guiliana reconvenes his Jazz Quartet (tenor saxophonist Jason Rigby, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Chris Morrissey) and unveils music full of lyrical intensity and rhythmic and improvisational depth. The fast, intricate “Inter-are” and “The Mayor of Rotterdam” share space with a more restrained, anthemic style on “September” and the title track. Having played on David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, Guiliana reserves the finale for a stirring and emotional cover of Bowie’s “Where Are We Now?”
