Sit Down Meal
The London post-punk four-piece Dry Cleaning specializes in surly takes on the absurd, with Florence Shaw’s sing-speak vocal outlining deadpan evocations of modern life. Their debut EP, Sweet Princess, referenced the media’s weird relationship to Meghan Markle; on this follow-up, self-optimization culture comes under the scalpel. Shaw repeats numbed gym mantras that give way to forceful expletives. She’s buoyed by the limber band, surfy on “Viking Hair” and prowling on “Spoils.” Although austere, they’re not averse to sadness (as on “Sombre One”) or mysticism: “Sit Down Meal” evokes Television’s cosmic yearning—it’s beguiling, yet still down-to-earth.
