Naturally, he leans toward the gentler entries in his songbook, downsizing the proggy pastorale of “Thumb” into a campfire hymn. Mascis also reveals himself to be the rare artist who can folk up Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Every Mother’s Son”) and punk hero Greg Sage (“On the Run”) with equal aplomb.
